Stellenbosch University is not releasing information on who was an organ donor, but admits that finding a donor is one major obstacle.
This is the first time a penis transplant ended successfully. A man in China underwent transplantation in 2005. The operation initially seemed successful, but according to the doctor, he was then asked his new genitals removed due to psychological problems he was having with his wife.
Head of the Urology Department of the University of Stellenbosch and the primary physician in this operation, Professor Andre van der Merwe, said she had previously predicted that it took two years after surgery for the patient before the patient can start a new organ function perfectly.
"We were very surprised by how quickly (patient) recovery," said van der Merwe.
As in Indonesia, in South Africa, particularly in the countryside circumcision took place when the man entered puberty. Stellenbosch University quoting experts estimate there are at least 250 cases of penile amputations per year in South Africa as a result of the implementation of the circumcision which failed.
According to the University of Stellenbosch, there are nine more patients who are waiting for a transplant donor genitals. Not explained how much it costs to perform the procedure.
