Nuclear Technology Can Preserving Cultural Heritage,.Starting from a desire to help preserve the cultural heritage objects, such as books and paintings, Research Institute of Applied Physics and Automation (NIIFTA), which is a subsidiary of state-owned companies from Russia Nuclear, Rosatom Corporation, doing a research on how to maintain quality cultural heritage by using radiation technology.
In his research, NIIFTA proved that irradiation at a dose of 15 kilograms can be used to clear the paper from the fungus. In this study, NIIFTA using three different types of paper and they found that the irradiation process does not damage the quality of the paper, which means this technique can be used in a variety of cultural heritage objects, such as books, manuscripts and paintings. In addition, this technique can also be used in the sculpture.
One problem often encountered on objects exposed to radiation are these objects become unsafe to be touched by humans. NIIFTA stated that for this irradiation process, they use cobalt-60 isotope that is not only safe, but also do not leave residual radiation on an item after irradiation process is done. In other words, humans can touch objects that have been subjected to irradiation process without worrying about harmful side effects appear.
NIIFTA also stated that they belonged irradiation techniques are in accordance with regulations made by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). IAEA itself is now busy pushing the nuclear industry players to use nuclear technology to preserve cultural heritage, especially in the regions of Europe.
